This is what a Herring Gull looks like in flight on a normal day. Notice the feet extended.

But when it gets bitter cold, it’s time to tuck in the landing gear.

This Great Black-backed gull has them tucked in tight. Nice warm toes on a cold day.

Waaw, really wonderful captures!.. i loved it..
Fascinating - I never knew they did this. And the captures are superb!
I didn't realize they did that...very cool, and beautiful photos too!
Up and away just like the undercarriage on a plane. Good shooting Steve.
Nice bright images Steve. It is interesting how they tuck their undercarriage away like that. Very aerodynamic, they obviously spent some time in the wind tunnel experimenting.{:)
I knew they did this - but I have never seen such clear examples before!
