This is what a Herring Gull looks like in flight on a normal day. Notice the feet extended.
But when it gets bitter cold, it’s time to tuck in the landing gear.
This Great Black-backed gull has them tucked in tight. Nice warm toes on a cold day.

Nice bright images Steve. It is interesting how they tuck their undercarriage away like that. Very aerodynamic, they obviously spent some time in the wind tunnel experimenting.{:)
I knew they did this - but I have never seen such clear examples before!
